The varsity tennis team competed against Midlothian on Tuesday, August 27. Midlothian was ranked 25th in the state coming into the match. Kaufman had already played another state-ranked team, Frisco Wakeland earlier in the season.
The Lion netters came out strong in doubles play. Kaufman's line one (Haynes/Ivie) and two boys (Santoyo/Bryant) won their matches in straight sets followed by mixed doubles (Sipriano/Quiroz) giving Kaufman a 3-0 lead. Midlothian responded by winning line one girls' doubles and line three boys' doubles in straight sets, leveling the score to 3-2 in Kaufman's favor. The lady lions (Garcia/Duckworth) delivered a huge win at line three girls' doubles in a tiebreaker. Finally, the Lady Lions line two girls (Crowley/Negri) fought back to win in a super tiebreaker, making the score 5-2 Kaufman's favor.
In singles, the Lions cushioned their lead with three quick wins at lines one, three, and four (Jackson Haynes, Lance Ivie, and Zach Bryant). Midlothian responded with wins at line one and two girls singles, making the score 8-4. Diego Santoyo, nursing an injury, fought through his match, winning at line two singles in a super tiebreaker. He earned the Heart Award for his play. Amalia Garcia delivered the final nail with an easy straight-set victory at line six girl's singles. Samantha Sipriano, Peytin Duckworth, and Colton Lawrence added to the Lion win with wins as well, making the final score 13-6.
This makes the team record 6-1 overall on the season and 2-0 in the district. Kaufman will play Red Oak next week.
